Data as Culture - Art that uses data as a material
Unborn and Untitled are explorations of how weaves might represent sound. They were made as part of a research project with Alex McLean whereby Harlizius-Klück and McLean collaboratively considered the mathematical structures of both woven and musical pattern. McLean generated original data from an electronic music piece by Aaron Funk (Venetian Snares), following a fractal Peano curve to reveal sonic structures as visual patterns. The space-filling Peano curve follows a simple path but on multiple scales, and is therefore able to visualise the structure of both the music and the sounds that make it. Harlizius-Klück transformed the music-derived data into weavable files and fed them into computer-controlled looms to create the works.
