Data as Culture - Art that uses data as a material
A mosaic digital portrait of the early nineteenth-century librarian Thomas Watts made of images of 4,300 books currently stored in the library’s basement provides live links from each book to the library’s electronic requesting system. The project makes visible the digital data generated in public institutions in order to illuminate the way that people and cultural organisations interact. The version displayed at Digital Catapult was a documentation version of the original work.
Elastic System is part of the ‘Internet of Cultural Things’ research project, a partnership between Richard Wright, Dr Mark Coté (King’s College London) and Professor Jussi Parikka (Winchester School of Art / University of Southampton) with the British Library.
